Know-the-Facts Review Game: 100 Must-Know Facts in a Q&A Game Format to Help Kids Really Remember Standards-Based Social Studies Information (American History)

This is a great in-class or group activity. It can be broken up into different categories, depending on what is being taught at the time. The cards are readable for both students and teachers. It's set up sort of like Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit.

Great activity outside of the textbooks.

Would be better if it came with a disk for the questions
I used the questions, but not the game. (PowerPoint Jeopardy) It has great questions that are broad enough that even my special ed students could be successful. For grades 5 and up.

History Pockets: Life in Plymouth Colony, Grades 1-3

I agree with all of teachingmytwo's comments, so I'll try not to repeat her points. I would add that while the projects have too much coloring, we minimalized this by just not coloring everything. The projects still look good not fully colored.

I do feel that if History Pockets are one's only hands-on supplement for your history/social studies program year after year (from one grade to the next), the projects from the various books do start to feel repetative. However, as each book stands on it's own, I think they're very well done, including this one, Life in Plymouth. The authors seem to choose just the right things in terms of subject matter to highlight from one's history study. So while one is, of course, reading text, real books, viewing videos, etc., Life in Plymouth will provide each child a way to walk away with a "scrap book" of the topics typically touched on.

By the way, the projects could actually be done as a family or in small groups in a classroom with each child doing one of the several projects per pocket. It would just depend on how independently your kids can work and what pace you'd like.

History Pockets Plymouth Colony
We loved this product. We use it as an addition to our current curriculum, My Father's World. We liked the books and the word cards in addition to the other projects. I would recommend this product to anyone. 12x18 construction paper can be found at Millers Pads and Paper on line. Great hands on project with easy to follow instructions.

A little better than the other History Pockets
While the History Pocket books are great for making a book, they are a little boring by themselves. There is too much coloring and not enough learning. We have learned more by reading library books, the encyclopedia, watching an educational show, or talking about the subjects.

When we purchased these, I liked the idea. But, after wasting a lot of our homeschool day with the children coloring (by day 3, coloring had turned into scribbles) I decided to use these as supplemental activities. We read and do art projects. We talk about the subjects.

My kids liked their pilgrim puppets, the diorama of the room... and that is about it...

We have several of the HP products. Now, we let the kids chose which ones looked "fun", and skip the rest.

While it is nice to have a book to look at afterwards, I feel they do not serve a great purpose. (And they are a waste of printer paper and ink.) They are nice if you need a "work sample" for school, but I feel they are just "busy work". History can be learned in much more interesting ways.

Fun addition to our study of early American history
I used this with my children, ages 7 and 9, to supplement our study of the colonies. It is a fun, hands on way to learn about the different aspects of colonial life. There are eight chapters with simple projects to do in each, and a pocket to store the things in for each chapter. The eight chapters are Voyage to the New World, The New World, Building a Village, Home Sweet Home, The Family, Working in Plymouth Colony, Going to School, What Did the Pilgrims Give Us? The projects involve paper, cutting and pasting, some writing, coloring, diaramas, and a vocabulary page for each chapter/pocket. My only complaint is that some of the projects get pretty repetitive, lots of cutting and glueing. I have other History Pockets books and we will probably only use parts of them, rather than do all the projects in all the pockets.

History Pockets: Ancient Greece

History Pockets: Ancient Greece

I procrastinated months before buying this product, saying, "I can do this myself, I don't need everything planned out for me." Yes you CAN search the Internet and photocopy pages from library books and make your own lapbooks/history pockets, but most teachers/homeschoolers have very full plates and it is MUCH easier to use these history pockets as the basis for your project and then supplement with other stuff.

After I relented and purchased the Ancient Greece history pockets, I couldn't believe how easily the project fell into place, after weeks of neglect. You - and your kids - will be very pleased with the informative and interesting results.

I also purchased the Greek Myths literature pockets and am very pleased with those too.

Also, for what it's worth, my kids are in 1st & 2nd grade, more or less, not the 4-6 that is recommended for these pockets. So the pockets have appeal for a broad range of ages.

On the other hand, I did find it necessary to do a fair amount of prep work for them - photocopying the pages and cutting out some of the projects. If they were a couple of years older, the history pockets could have been done independently.

I Liked It But My Student Didn't
I've been impressed by the content of the 3 "History Pockets" books we've used in our homeschool (Ancient Civilizations, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece). I think they would be really helpful for visual and tactile learners. Unfortunately, my DD hated all the cutting & pasting involved. She found it to be busywork.

I would recommend the "History Pockets" to students who don't mind all the prep work involved in making the folders/lapbook.

Great addition to history curriculum -especially for kids that love crafts!
I used this to suppliment another world history curriculum with my kindergardener and 4th grader. My little guy couldn't do everything, but he enjoyed the things he did. They both loved it. They are proud of the "books" that they each made. I will try their other products.

The students and I had fun naming the know actors:Tom Cruise,Patrick Swayze,Diane Lane,Rob Lowe,Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid), Emilio Estevez and S.E. Hinton(I didn't know this)played in this movie. Students were amazed of this books timeframe, the authors story and the relevance of this story in spite of it's era. Educators don't pass this up. Use it the first semester or end of the year and experience success! <

A Must-Have For English Teachers
This literature guide really saved my life this year. My job switched just a week before the school year began, and I ended up teaching a different class and grade level than I expected. I had a rather "tough crowd" of students. Many of them had reached 8th grade without ever reading a novel. Since I had several at-risk students, The Outsiders was a natural choice of a book to teach, but I had NO lessons or activities to go with it. I used this for the vocabulary lessons, quizzes, and tests mostly, but it had additional activities. I wish it were a bit more extensive, with more ideas for projects and creative writing, but considering the price, I found it very beneficial. I've purchased literature guides for 3 or 4 times the price of this one, and they weren't nearly as helpful. I highly recommend this one! I've even recommeded it to colleagues and a couple of parents that are home-schooling their kids.

A New Teacher's Heaven
What a great resource! From the author biography, to pre-reading activities, to literary analysis worksheets, to vocabulary activities, I am so pleased with my purchase. I am going to be starting school in a few weeks and cannot wait to use this with my students. It really makes me feel more confident entering my first year of teaching. I have lesson plans already done for me! What a gem!

The Perfect Resource
This literature guide was recommended to me after I had tried using the Teacher Created Materials version. Let me tell you--making paper dolls and recipes are NOT what my students are being tested on! Once I got this literature guide I threw all my other stuff away--this really has everything you need to teach the entire novel. My kids have always loved this book, but now that they have activities and things to really stimulate their thinking, they love it even more. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! In fact, I just purchased Among the Hidden--I will let you all know how that guide is when I get it. I can't wait!

This is a must for little ones who love to draw.
My son (eight years old) (very good artist) ate this book up. He copied every page in just three days then he was mixing scenes. His drawings took on a superb quality that he had not reached before. The bonus is, he practices his handwriting while learning interesting facts that are good to know. We'll be buying each edition for Christmas for him.

Wonderful!
This book is brightly illustrated and well priced for the high quality. It is a wonderful resourse for parents as well as children. The subject matter covers a broad range of interesting information. Bravo!
