I was lucky to get this book at 1/2 price for . I am amazed by the way this book has been written. For people who are interested in reading islamic history, achievements, milestones this is the one. It talks about the Islamic civilization in different parts of the world. The Pictures are great, paper quality is excellent. It is definately worth its price. Book is really heavy, that tells you it has lots of pages.

My honest opinion is this book is a must buy for interested parties. Greate job authors, translators, editors, publishers.

Product Description:
Islam, the second largest and the youngest of the major world religions, has changed the world and left its mark on human history since the appearance of the prophet Mohammed in the seventh century. This book follows the historical development of the Islamic dynasties and regions, showing the variety of their forms of artistic expression from the beginning until today. From decorative elements of buildings to calligraphy and the embellishment of everyday objects, ornamentation, that most characteristic Islamic art form, is displayed in an extraordinary rich range of ways. The contributions of important scholars bring to life before our very eyes this culture, which belongs next to Greek and Roman antiquity as one of the pillars of our modern society.

Excellent review of Art & Architecture in Islam - a bit academic but thorough
Goes through the history of Islamic Art & Architecture by dynasty & region. Editors did a good job as the contributions fit together well - but I'm not an expert!. Contains some good pictures as well. I've bought three copies now from various sources - for my mum and sisters as well. (Warning: don't try and browse the book when kids are pestering you).

Pictures don't use the size of the book
I can't add much more than has been said by the other reviewers here - this is a fascinating study of the art and architecture of Islam at a great price.

My one reservation, however, is the general size of the pictures. Unlike the other books in this series which I have (Gothic, Romanesque, Egypt, Baroque) there are far fewer full page bleeds - it is much more scrappy and bitty in its presentation of the images. It is more like a giant guide book.

Considering most people will be interested in this for the images (it is, after all, an art book), you are left wondering why the book is so big when most of the images don't make use of it.

put this in your library? this is your library!
Size does matter-this book is huge particularly if you consider the giveaway price(the paper costs more).Ok so it's big and it has pictures-nice ones! It's also comprehensive, diverse and well written, this book is the best there is for an amazing tour of islamic art and architecture.

Islam: Art & Architecture
Excellent book. Beautifully written, great photography...and a wonderful tour of the world of Islam. As always, Konemann has provided readers with many, many hours of pleasure.

The Art and Architecture of the Texas Missions (Jack and Doris Smothers Series in Texas History, Life, and Culture)

The Art and Architecture of the Texas Missions (Jack and Doris Smothers Series in Texas History, Life, and Culture, No. 6)

Author: Jacinto Quirarte
Edition: 1
ISBN: 0292769024
Number Of Pages: 261
Languages:
Unknown: English
Original Language: English
Published: English

Product Description:
Built to bring Christianity and European civilization to the northern frontier of New Spain in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries . . . secularized and left to decay in the nineteenth century . . . and restored in the twentieth century, the Spanish missions still standing in Texas are really only shadows of their original selves. The mission churches, once beautifully adorned with carvings and sculptures on their façades and furnished inside with elaborate altarpieces and paintings, today only hint at their colonial-era glory through the vestiges of art and architectural decoration that remain. To paint a more complete portrait of the missions as they once were, Jacinto Quirarte here draws on decades of on-site and archival research to offer the most comprehensive reconstruction and description of the original art and architecture of the six remaining Texas missions--San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo), San José y San Miguel de Aguayo, Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, San Juan Capistrano, and San Francisco de la Espada in San Antonio and Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo in Goliad. Using church records and other historical accounts, as well as old photographs, drawings, and paintings, Quirarte describes the mission churches and related buildings, their decorated surfaces, and the (now missing) altarpieces, whose iconography he extensively analyzes. He sets his material within the context of the mission era in Texas and the Southwest, so that the book also serves as a general introduction to the Spanish missionary program and to Indian life in Texas.

This classic survey of Italian Baroque art and architecture focuses on the arts in every center between Venice and Sicily in the early, high, and late Baroque periods. The Coral Mind: Adrian Stokes's Engagement with Art History, Criticism, Architecture, and Psychoanalysis

The Coral Mind: Adrian Stokes\'s Engagement with Art History, Criticism, Architecture, and Psychoanalysis

Author: Stephen Bann
ISBN: 0271029706
Number Of Pages: 230
Languages:
Unknown: English
Original Language: English
Published: English

Product Description:
Our view of modernism in the arts has been largely shaped by the prominence of painting and, in particular, by a succession of major painters working in Paris--from Courbet and Manet to the Cubists. Moreover, modernist aesthetics has come to be equated with the concept of formalism, which has been both advocated and attacked in the critical roster of the twentieth century. Adrian Stokes offered a singular critical voice challenging us to think differently about modernism. Guided by his personal interpretation of the early Renaissance and by insights derived from psychoanalytic theory, Stokes developed his own style of communicating the truths of aesthetic experience. The essays in The Coral Mind make Stokes required reading for anyone with a serious interest in British modernism; psychoanalysis and art; alternatives to Clement Greenberg's account of modernism; the relevance of architecture, sculpture, and ballet to our understanding of twentieth century art; 'writerly' art criticism; and the concept of 'research' in art history. Contributors include David Carrier, Martin Golding, Michael Ann Holly, David Hulks, Étienne Jollet, Stephen Kite, Peter Leech, Alex Potts, Richard Read, Janet Sayers, Lyndsey Stonebridge, and Paul Tucker.

Seventeenth Century Art and Architecture (2nd Edition)

Seventeenth Century Art and Architecture (2nd Edition)

Where can the interested reader find so much in one book about the great seventeenth century masters of art such as Caravaggio, The Carracci, Bernini, Rubens, Rembrandt, van Dyck, Velazquez, Hals, Vermeer, Poussin and Claude? The answer is in the recently published text "Seventeenth Century Art and Architecture" by Professor Ann Sutherland Harris.

In this wonderfully written and very well illustrated book - there are 411 illustrations of which 176 are in excellent color - Professor Harris glides through the seventeenth century with the grace and ease of a ballerina, covering the Baroque period from its inception in Catholic Italy to its final days in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic. Major artists and a number of less well know artists are covered succinctly, lucidly, and without pedantry or reference to obscure scholarly works. The author is so well-versed in the subject matter that she is able to convey it clearly to the general reader with almost every painting described and discussed in detail.

Orginally conceived as a college text, this book is a must read for anyone interested in the art, lives of the artists, politics, and history of the most important century in European art and culture. Although the title gives equal weight to art and architecture, much more of the art of the period is discussed than architecture, yet the reader is given a full taste of the architecture of the period as well.

This is a book that one will want to read and re-read time and time again.

Incredible
Quick delivery and in the condition that was promised. Very satisfied. The book focuses on Western Baroque painting with some architecture and sculpture history. A great book, with lots of beautiful images.

Seventeeth-Century Art & Architecture
The book looked alright it did not have any folded edges just the front cover had a crease in it. It arrived faster than I thought it would come. All in all not bad. The book looked good even with the crease.

Falling Apart
I have read this book, not for enjoyment, but for a course in Baroque art. Therefore I cannot say it was enjoyable. It is a good book if you are looking to see many works. The pictures are fairly good, although I HATE a book that depicts color art work in black & white photography. About 2/3 of the photos are in black and white. Also, this edition is FALLING APART & I don't think it was used, or at least not used much by whoever owned it previously. The pages are coming apart from the back of the book.

great text, lousy pictures
I am currently enrolled in a Baroque and Rococo art history class at my university. I was told to get this book, and I excitedly did. After reading it for a bit, I noticed a few aspects that bothered me. The text is informative and explores the artworks wonderfully. Unfortunately, in the description, the authors describe the colors of the piece and how critical they are in the piece, which would be wonderful, except for the fact that half of the images in the text are in black and white! I would have to wait until class or find the images online in order to see what they were talking about.

So, if you are looking to buy this book, just be aware that the writing and historical knowledge are wonderful, but the images are dull and mainly colorless.

Buddhist Art and Architecture (World of Art)

Buddhist Art and Architecture (World of Art)

The 1993 edition of Fisher's "Buddhist Art and Architecture" was reprinted, with revisions, in 2002. The cover of the revised edition is like the 1993 edition (i.e. the Kansas Guanyin), but now framed within a diamond-shape which is inset into a black background. The text is current on recent scholarship, such as the role of aniconism in Early Buddhist art, and cosmological interpretations of Angkor Wat. Attention is paid to the organic development of Buddhist art styles as they evolved in being transmitted from country to country, although I wish that even more emphasis had been put on this. The book is organized by region: of its 200 pages, approximately 40-50 pages each are devoted to India, China, Korea/Japan, and Southeast Asia. The book's wide area coverage is both an advantage and a disadvantage, since much has been left out. For example, there is only one paragraph on the life of the Buddha himself, and not even a mention of Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavillion), arguably Japan's most famous and beautiful architectural icon. I would also have liked to see a greater use of color illustrations (only 32 of 179, in the present edition). I hope that readers who start with this book will go on to more in-depth treatments, such as the same author's excellent introduction to the Art of Tibet (Thames & Hudson, 1998).

Product Description:
Buddhism is the single common thread uniting the Asian world, from India to South-East Asia and through Central Asia to China, Korea and Japan. To guide and inspire believers, innumerable symbols and images were made, beginning in India in the 3rd century BC. This phenomenally diverse tradition includes not only frescoes, relief carvings, colossal statues, silk embroideries and bronze ritual objects but also rock-cut shrines with a thousand Buddhas, the glorious stupas of South-East Asia and the pagodas of the Far East, the massive "mandala in stone" of Borobudur in Java and entire 13th-century temple complexes at Angkor in Cambodia. The author describes all the Buddhist schools and cultures, and explains their imagery, from Tibetan cosmic diagrams and Korean folk art to early Sri Lankan sites and Japanese Zen gardens.

Positive opinion. Good quality and fast transportation.
The book is as the description and is pretty good. the tranportation is fast. Thanks.

A solid introduction
I am an architectural historian with a fairly extensive knowledge of Buddhist architecture. Even though this is an introductory text, Fisher's book explained some things I've failed to find anywhere else. Another plus is that Fisher includes Buddhist art/architecture from every Buddhist country. Usually books of this type leave out countries for expediency. Though this book is short, Fisher touches it all.

A well organized introductory text
Fisher's book offers an accessible, well-organized overview of both the evolution and meaning of Budhist art and architecture for the uninitiated. Never having studied Buddhism or Asian History prior to a recent trip to Southeast Asia, I found the balance between general explanations of subject matter and geographic breakdown useful. Returning to the book upon return, it was clear that most of the major, recurring symbols observed (Budha's subduing of the Mara, other meditative and teaching postures, the sometimes uneasy juxtaposition of Hindu and Budhist structure and symbols, etc.) were mentioned in this survey. The narrative is clear, if occasionally dry. The photographs are not, however, ideally located to match their corresponding texts, and it would have been helpful to have included in the captions a note about where the given object was located (rather than having to wade through a paragraph at the back of the book that does not even list the citations numerically). Still, the book is well indexed and the illustrations are well chosen.

A quick but thoughtful history of Buddhist Art in Asia
As an instructor in Asian Arts and cultures survey courses, I am always looking for short works that give a quick overview of essential cultural elements across the wide spectrum of Asian experience. This book is excellent as a source book for understanding the breadth and beauty of Buddhist art forms throughout Asia.
