The Art of Mesoamerica: From Olmec to Aztec (World of Art)

A solid, useful one-volume survey of Mesoamerican art. Miller is a noted expert in the field, and she does a commendable job of presenting a large amount of information in a short space without resorting to superficiality. The text is clear and the photographs are both copious and well-chosen, with numerous color plates adding to the enjoyment.Almost of necessity, however, the writing style tends to be fairly dense. Those looking for a readable "History of Mesoamerica" should probably go elsewhere. Nonetheless, most readers will find this book rewarding -- after which they will want to turn to more specific and detailed volumes by Linda Schele and Michael Coe, among others.

The Art of Mesoamerica: From Olmec to Aztec (World of Art)

Product Description:
This essential guide to the art and architecture of ancient Mesoamerica succinctly and evocatively summarizes the artistic achievements of the high pre-Columbian civilizations—Olmec, Maya, Teotihuacan, Tolec, Aztec—as well as those of their less well-known contemporaries. The pyramids and palaces, jades and brightly colored paintings emerge from these pages as vividly as when they first astonished Cortés's men in 1519. There was a surprising unity in Mesoamerican culture from Mexico to Honduras and from 1500 BC to the Spanish Conquest. Among many features shared were a 260-day ritual calendar and a preoccupation with gods representing natural forces. Current research also emphasizes the great importance of rites of kingship, including warfare and blood sacrifice. In this third edition, Mary Miller opens up new windows on the ancient past with fresh readings of works of art, all the while offering careful archaeological interpretations. Recent hieroglyphic decipherments provide insights into ancient art, spelling out long-distance connections between the Maya and their neighbors. Updated throughout, with special attention to evidence for dating, the new Art of Mesoamerica is the ideal companion for students and travelers. 193 illustrations, 44 in color.

Oceanic Art (World of Art)

In his book Oceanic Art, Nicholas Thomas goes beyond the eye's view of the artwork produced from Oceania, giving the reader the background information and reasons why the distinct works of art were created. Thomas goes through each culture, giving and explaining examples to match the history of each respective culture. I was impressed by the thoroughness of Thomas, not only showing ancient artwork, but photos from Oceania today, as the respective cultures are being preserved. His analysis of the artwork was very well done as he not only explains the artwork, but gives the reader a sense of the culture also. Having studied art, I was impressed with all the examples and pictures in the book, then relating art with history. I would highly suggest this insightful book.

Oceanic Art (World of Art)

Product Description:
The colours and patterns of the art of the Pacific Islands - spears and shields, carved canoe prows, feather capes or tortoisehell ornaments - have interested Western audiences since the voyages of Captain Cook and Bougainville. Oceanic art in particular, had an influence on the development of the European modernist movement, influencing artists such as Gauguin, Picasso, Giacometti and Kirchner. Until recently, the tendency in the West has ben to view the art of Oceania as "primitive", mysterious, shrouded in taboo. Nicholas Thomas, in this survey, goes beyond this view to discover the meaning and significance of art for the people of the Pacific. While each region has certain art forms and practices that characterize it - the ancestral carvings of Maori and Sepik ceremonial houses; rituals of exchange and warfare in the Soloman Islands; body art in Polynesia; and women's art forms, such as barkcloth - Oceanic art as a whole is continually being shaped by cross-cultural stimuli within the Pacific and beyond, combining local motifs and materials with new styles and techniques. The illustrations cover the works that evoke the most deep-rooted customs to those which address contemporary political issues.

The Artistic Culture between the Wars 1920-1945: ART of the 20th Century Volume II (Art of the Twentieth Century)

The Artistic Culture between the Wars 1920-1945: ART of the 20th Century Volume II (Art of the Twentieth Century)

Product Description:
This second volume in the Art of the Twentieth Century series analyzes and presents the diverse world of artistic production between the two world wars, beginning with the environment that took shape in the immediate wake of World War I. The Artistic Culture Between the Wars is an interdisciplinary survey of this period’s changing artistic climate that included the re-emergence of a figurative approach (the New Objectivity), and the evolution of an avant-garde that is now historicized by its second-generation artists. Also considered are phenomena such as Surrealism, the change in taste from Art Deco to Novecentismo, and the expression of the totalitarian regimes during the outbreak of World War II. The book’s chronological boundaries stretch from the birth of the Dada in Germany to the birth of Abstract Expressionism (1943-1945).

A Year in Art: A Masterpiece a Day (Year in Art) (Year in Art) (Year in Art)

I just received this book yesterday as a gift-just before the start of a new year. The timing was perfect because it is designed to work both as an art photo-daily calendar, and a day planner. It is 365 pages (7"x 9"), and is similar in concept to the "Word a Day," or "Quote a Day" desk calendars. What separates this from the average calendar, diary, or day planner, is its' glossy photographs of art masterpieces. On the left side of the page (top) is a short quote from a famous artist or writer, in the middle, 6 lines to write your own planned daily activities. The date is across the bottom of the page. It starts with January 1, and ends December 31st., but excludes the year. On the right side are 365 full-page photos of important art through the ages. There are numerous examples of religious and classical (Greek and Roman) art, as well as some contemporary works. Photos are good quality, but are not among the "TOP 40" masterpieces we all know so well.

To use it as a planner might be a little difficult for me. Firstly, the book doesn't lay completely flat. Secondly I, personally, wouldn't enjoy recording my own daily entries, scribbles, and doodles amongst the art treasures of the world. However, others might enjoy viewing their own personal reflections. Whichever way it is used, I think everyone will agree, it is a beautiful art collection.

A Year in Art: A Masterpiece a Day (Year in Art) (Year in Art) (Year in Art)

Product Description:
Imagine 365 masterpieces of art from around the world at your
fingertips. That s what readers will find as they turn the pages
day after day to discover a full-page exquisitely reproduced
painting, artifact, photograph, drawing, print, or sculpture
from every culture and epoch imaginable. Further enhancing
these pages are suitable quotations to ponder, surprise, and
delight. Opposite the color illustrations, this generously
proportioned volume offers plenty of space to record
birthdays, anniversaries, and other important dates as well as
personal notes and reflections. The range and quality of the
pieces featured here will satisfy the aesthetic appetites of the
most discerning appreciator of art and will offer inspiration
every day of the year.

Land Art (Basic Art)

Number Of Pages: 94

Product Description:
The earth as canvas In the mid-60s, artists in the USA and Europe began planning works for sites outside the narrow boundaries of galleries and museums. It began with ephemeral enhancements or traces left in deserted landscapes, in the deserts of America, or in the moors of Scotland. Following this were spectacular earthen sculptures of gigantic proportions, some of which are still in the process of completion today. One distinguishing feature of Land Art is its critical preoccupation with the tradition of sculpture. Sculpture can now be an earthwork excavation, a field of metal poles, a buried hut, a trace in the grass, or even a book. Another of the movement's special characteristics is its emphasis on site-specific, outdoor works intended to lastingly alter our perception of places, and to set new parameters in art production and reception. Artists included: Carl Andre, Alice Aycock, Herbert Bayer, Christo & Jeanne Claude, Walter De Maria, Agnes Denes, Jan Dibbets, Hamish Fulton, Andy Goldsworthy, Michael Heizer, Nancy Holt, Peter Hutchinson, Patricia Johanson, Dani Karavan, Richard Long, Mary Miss, Robert Morris, Dennis Oppenheim, Charles Ross, Robert Smithson, Alan Sonfist, James Turrell Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Genre series features: a detailed introduction with approximately 35 photographs, plus a timeline of the most important events (political, cultural, scientific, etc.) that took place during the time period a selection of the most important works of the epoch; each is presented on a 2-page spread with a full-page image and, on the facing page, a description/interpretation of the work and brief biography of the artist as well as additional information such as a referencework, portrait of the artist, and/or citations

The ideal image-based look at Land Art
Sure there's a lot of theory in the environmental/land art movement, but we have to be able to judge art from the end results as well. This elegant little book has some of the finest photos of Land Art installations that I've ever seen. And it surveys a wide range of installations from the Christo fabrics, landscaping installations, environmental performance art, and large scale installations.

Disappointing
Although the book is valuable, the selection of illlustrations is disappointing in terms of graphic interest. However, much is in the mind of the beholder & others might enjoy the selected items. Generally speaking, I find Dover books an outstanding value.

Vincent Van Gogh: Sunflowers and Swirly Stars (Smart About Art)

My 5, 6 and 8 yr old kids are entranced when I read them the Smart About Art books. After reading one, I came back to Amazon and ordered as many as I could.

They are written as a student would write a book report, but are humorous, touching and extremely informative with plenty of examples of the artists' work. I attended Art School 20+ years ago and it was a refresher course for me as well. It includes background/personal info about the artist, but only as much as a child can comprehend and as it pertains to his art. These books have just the right amount of info on the artists and their work.

I wanted to share the world of art with my kids. Though my youngest two still use coloring books and my oldest reads chapter books without illustrations, these Smart About Art picture books are the perfect mix where they all can gain something from them--this series is neither too young nor too advanced.

After years of reading picture books, my kids often ask "can that really happen?" or "is that person real?" I wanted a break from the imaginative world of children's lit and now I'm happy to finally answer "Yes, this person really existed, this really happened!" after reading the Smart About Art books.
