Ready-to-Use Medieval Illustrations: 424 Different Copyright-Free Designs (Dover Clip-Art Series)

Ready-to-Use Medieval Illustrations: 424 Different Copyright-Free Designs (Dover Clip-Art Series)

More or less copyright free, and Dover seems to want you to use it for whatever makes sense to you. And the books are relatively inexpensive, on good paper. And they've been on sale here recently (early fall 2008)

That said, I'm not sure there's a whole lot in the way of images I can use for quilting designs here.

Which is OK too, because they are a lot of fun to browse.

Great reference, small variety
Unless you happen to still paste up keyline boards and need clip art to literally "clip out", the Dover Ready-to-Use books offer less images for the price. They're printed on slick, hard paper with nothing on the back of the page. I discovered that half of the same images were available in my other Dover reference books of similar themes. The picture variety spans a broad spectrum of the Middle Ages and Renaissance with lots of etchings and the occasional celtic knot. It's a good reference, just limited.

Clip Art
Of the Dover Books, this is one of the most interesting. The only caveat is they don't offer it with a CD like so many of their books. Highly recommend for hilighting projects. It adds alot of detail to manuscripts, music, etcetera.

Monarchy and Consent: The Coronation Book of Charles V (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Monarchy and Consent: The Coronation Book of Charles V (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Product Description:
The Coronation Book of Charles V of France, a de luxe manuscript made in 1365 is of considerable historical and art-historical importance. Its text describes step by step the coronation ceremony of Charles V and Jeanne of Bourbon, and its cycle of 38 miniatures illustrates in the greatest details the kingmaking and queenmaking ritual which was seen to constitute an expression of the political agenda of this Valois ruler. The author looks at the political and religious significance of coronation ritual and examines the way in which a changed conception of the monarchy (one in which the electors, members of the church and secular estates are given unprecedented prominence) is reflected in an entirely new pictorial realism.

Print Publishing in Sixteenth Century Rome: Growth and Expansion, Rivalry and Murder (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Print Publishing in Sixteenth Century Rome: Growth and Expansion, Rivalry and Murder (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Author: Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe
ISBN: 190537514X
Number Of Pages: 464

Original Language: English

Product Description:
This volume brings formal coherence to the overwhelming mass of prints published in sixteenth-century Rome. It is introductory in scope and does not attempt to include every print published by every publisher. The aim is to provide an overview of who was publishing what prints and when over the course of the sixteenth century. The five chapters provide an outline of the history of print publishing while the appendices serve to clarify chronologies and reveal groupings and patterns. A document central to this book deserves some comment. The record of the hearing into the murder of Gerolamo da Modena provided an opportunity to meet a number of the publishers, printers, and engravers at work in Rome in the decades after the mid-century and to understand better their lives, activities, and relationships.

Insightful overview
The Arts of Japan did not go into as much detail as I had hoped it would, it was essentially an overview of generalized examples, and the format was not ideal for an art history book - there were the pages of text followed by the illustrations discussed in the text all grouped together at the end of the chapter, which works but is not my favorite format for discussing such subjects. Overall, however, the Arts of Japan is good if you're looking for an insightful glimpse into the art of different periods in Japanese history.

Picturing Women in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art (Manchester Medieval Studies)

Picturing Women in Late Medieval and Renaissance Art (Manchester Medieval Studies)

Product Description:
This extensively illustrated book discusses the representation of women in the art of the late Middle Ages in Northern Europe. Drawing on a wide range of different media, but making particular use of the rich plethora of woodcuts, the author charts how the images of women changed during the period and proposes two basic categories - the Virgin and Eve, good and evil. Within these, however, we discover attitudes to sinful, foolish, married and unmarried women and the style and use of these images exposes the full extent of the misogyny entrenched in medieval society. Interesting too is the variety of 'good' women and how they were used to confirm the social position of women throughout different classes. We also learn how women fought back: starting in the margins of manuscripts and them emerging in misericords, we find images of women making fools of men; love triangles; and unequal couples, where the women 'wear the trousers'. With the advent of printing, a whole genre of satirical prints about women snowballed, and the views they express became available for mass consumption. This fascinating and rich study charts this process in a lively and readable way.

Early Netherlandish Painting: From Rogier Van Der Weyden to Gerard David (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Early Netherlandish Painting: From Rogier Van Der Weyden to Gerard David (Studies in Medieval and Early Renaissance Art History)

Average Rating:
Author: O. Pacht
ISBN: 1872501842
Number Of Pages: 264

Original Language: German

Product Description:
Otto Pächt's studies of the Early Netherlandish painters are the fruit of a lifetime's research. Following his book on the brothers Van Eyck and their circle, this volume deals with the next generation of artists, the great figures of the 15th and early 16th century: Rogier van der Weyden, Petrus Christus, Aelbert van Ouwater, Dieric Bouts, Justus van Gent, Hugo van der Goes, Geertgen tot Sint Jans, Hans Memling and Gerard David. In the tradition of the Vienna School, Pächt's approach put emphasis on formal analysis and on direct contact with the works of art themselves. Taking certain key works by each artist as examples, he discusses every facet of the work including style, mood, iconography, symbolism and construction of space. The chapters are linked by the theme of imitation and continuation: the author compares the same subject as treated by various artists and shows how artists adopted developed ideas and motifs first employed by their predecessors. Although his touchstone was the evidence of his eyes, Pächt was always responsive to the theories of other scholars, and this volume is a gateway to an influential period in the history of art. The proximity of the illustrations to the text enhances his account of the great figures of the period, and there is a folding plate, in colour, of Rogier van de Weyden's Last Judgement alterpiece for the chapel of the hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, in Beaume.

GREAT FLEMISH ART INFO
Unlike just a few years ago, today there are many books about Netherlandish and Flemish art of all periods. "From Rogier van Der Weyden to Gerard David" is a beautiful book filled with excellent color and b/w illustrations of the works being discussed. The authors are experts who give adequate details about the artist and his immediate circle, as well as the wider European influence on him and even the artist's effect upon the art world at that time and afterward. While the style is sedate and professional, it's never stodgy or overly academic, the authors being quite good at balancing the two. There are few gaps or unincluded details or individuals, so I can heartily recommend this for anyone who already loves Flemish art or those who want to learn more and to see clear, sharp reproductions of these incredible artists' work.

Medieval Art

Medieval Art

Author: Veronica Sekules
ISBN: 0192842412
Number Of Pages: 240
Languages:
Published: English

Product Description:
This refreshing new look at Medieval art conveys a very real sense of the impact of art on everyday life in Europe from 1000 to 1500. It examines the importance of art in the expression and spread of knowledge and ideas, including notions of the heroism and justice of war, and the dominant view of Christianity.
Taking its starting point from issues of contemporary relevance, such as the environment, the identity of the artist, and the position of women, the book also highlights the attitudes and events specific to the sophisticated visual culture of the Middle Ages, and goes on to link this period to the Renaissance. The fascinating question of whether commercial and social activities between countries encouraged similar artistic taste and patronage, or contributed to the defining of cultural difference in Europe, is fully explored.
