Design: The History, Theory and Practice of Product Design

Design: The History, Theory and Practice of Product Design

Product Description:
Design today is a global instrument. Bernhard Burdek traces the progress of design from its beginnings in the late 19th century, through the most significant movements of the 20th century up to those recent developments in biological engineering which will shape the 21st century. Design is now a discipline in its own right and its expertise can be incorporated within interdisciplinary processes. The most important fundamental principles of design theory and methodology are presented, looking in particular at the communicative function of products and highlighting aspects such as corporate and service design, design management, strategic design, interface/interaction design and human design.

The Practice of Her Profession: Florence Carlyle, Canadian Painter in the Age of Impressionism (Mcgill-Queen's/Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation Studies in Art History)

The Practice of Her Profession: Florence Carlyle, Canadian Painter in the Age of Impressionism (Mcgill-Queen\'s/Beaverbrook Canadian Foundation Studies in Art History)

Author: Susan Butlin
ISBN: 0773535098
Number Of Pages: 309
Languages:
Unknown: English
Original Language: English
Published: English

Product Description:
Florence Carlyle (1864-1923), born in Galt, Ontario, emerged as one of the most successful Canadian artists of her time. Trained in Paris, she lived and worked in New York City and in Canada, cultivating a career as a popular portrait and genre painter. Known for her masterful use of colour, Carlyle's paintings are nuanced and perceptive portrayals of feminine spaces, the female figure, and women's domestic work. In "The Practice of Her Profession", Susan Butlin draws on unpublished letters and family memoirs to recount Carlyle's personal and professional life. She explores Carlyle's artistic influences, her relationships with artist colleagues and encounters with the cultural worlds of Paris, New York, and early twentieth-century Canada, and provides a detailed examination of Carlyle's paintings. Butlin's vivid description of the artistic life of women of this era, from access to art training to the important role of women's art societies, introduces readers to Carlyle's many accomplished contemporaries - Helen McNicoll, Mary Reid, Laura Muntz, Sarah Holden, Sydney Tully, Elizabeth McGillivray Knowles, and others. Florence Carlyle's life - that of an independent risk-taker who actively constructed her own professional artistic practice and lived in a self-determined way that was often at odds with social convention - reveals much about the possibilities and limitations for a woman artist in the nouveau siecle. "The Practice of Her Profession" is important reading for all those interested in Canadian art and cultural history, and the history of women artists in Canada.

Art Fundamentals: Theory and Practice

Art Fundamentals: Theory and Practice

I've used this book for nearly a decade in its various editions, particularly for teaching freshman level courses in art and design. Regardless of the discipline, or even the level, the concepts and explanations are absolutely invaluable for translating what so many people (even veterans) assume is subjective quality into objective rational analysis of why a creative visual work may succeed or fail. Having absorbed the material in this book, my verbal critiques of student work have gained clarity and effectiveness. The same is true for the students who study the material - they too become excellent critics.

Highly recommended for teachers and students of all levels in art and design (advanced high school, and all college levels).
