Going Through the Storm: The Influence of African American Art in History

Average Rating:
Author: Sterling Stuckey
ISBN: 0756797829
Languages:
Unknown: English
Original Language: English
Published: English

Product Description:
Upon his arrival in the North, Frederick Douglass found, to his utter astonishment, "persons who could speak of the singing among slaves as the evidence of their contentment and happiness." As late as 1903, W.E.B. Du Bois observed that African American spirituals had led naive whites to believe that "life was joyous to the black slave, careless and happy." While these misconceptions have largely disappeared, the history of African American culture--and its importance to American history as a whole--is still a subject little understood by the majority of Americans.
In Going through the Storm, Sterling Stuckey offers a compelling look at one of the world's richest cultural traditions. He traces the fertile legacy of African American art from its roots in tribal myth, through its blossoming in slave music and dance, to its fruition in the great gospel-singing movements of the 1960s. In the process he shows how this tradition, grounded as it was in adversity, represents one of the great triumphs of the human spirit: slaves and their descendants, by way of Negro spirituals, the blues, and jazz, transformed the pain of oppression into a transcendent and timeless beauty. And, as he explores these various styles, Stuckey reveals that the development of a distinctive African American aesthetic follows (and helps illuminate) the course of the nation's history.
In a series of engaging, lucidly written essays, Going through the Storm covers the entire spectrum of African American culture, offering along the way many fresh and important insights. Within the context of slavery and slave music, Stuckey presents a new look at the foundations of black nationalism and the civil rights movement. In his eloquent reflections on Paul Robeson, he shows how black art offers a commentary on the human spirit so genuine and resonant that its appeal has reached across the boundaries of race to touch most of humanity. Writing of Herman Melville, he demonstrates how the great novelist was struck with the importance of African culture in history--and the reciprocal relationship of history to African culture--and carefully explored this theme in Benito Cereno. Frederick Douglass is presented for the first time as a major theorist of African American culture, one whose thought is profoundly relevant to our current debates on culture and race. And, perhaps most important, Stuckey explains that because black artists have been deeply interested for so long in the question of oppression, their art is of particular use to historians. In what amounts to nothing less than a revolutionary approach, Stuckey considers the uses of music as history, arguing that an easing of barriers between academic disciplines will lead to a better understanding of human life in general.
A timely, readable, and often moving volume, Going through the Storm not only expands our understanding of black music, dance, literature, and folklore, but provides a new vantage point from which to view the entire landscape of American culture.

Gardner's Art Through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume I

Gardner\'s Art Through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume I

Bought "Gardner's Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume I" for my daughter's college textbook need. Fair value versus other suppliers and Amazon actually delivers what they sell. Had originally tried to buy this at Barnes & Noble, but unlike Amazon, B&N charges you credit card, and then tells you they will not be able to deliver the product until the semester is almost over, will not refund your money until they send you the book, then tell you there easy return policy does not apply at the local store if the local manger does not feel like honoring it. I shredded my B&N card, and will deal with Amazon from now on - may thanks to Amazon for always delivering! WT

Not the One I Ordered
Book is good; however, the seller claimed it was never used, but the one I received has some cover bents.

Great Condition
I recieved this book in a timely manner. I was also very impressed with the quality of the book. Thank you!

Couldn't believe it was the right book!
When I found this book on Amazon I couldn't believe the price. I had to triple check the book cover and ISBN to make sure it was the correct book because the price was so much lower than I had seen it anywhere else(college book store, campus postings, other websites). Took a 'chance' and ordered it on a Thursday and it showed up on Friday, using Amazon Prime shipping. I opened the box and was pleased to find my book in exactly the condition it was described to be. Overall, excellent experience.

European Art of the Fourteenth Century (Art Through the Centuries)

European Art of the Fourteenth Century (Art Through the Centuries)

Author: Sandra Baragli
ISBN: 0892368594
Number Of Pages: 384
Languages:

Original Language: English
Published: English

Product Description:
Fourteenth-century Europe was ravaged by famine, war, and, most devastatingly, the Black Plague. These widespread crises inspired a mystical religiosity, which emphasized both ecstatic joy and extreme suffering, producing emotionally charged and often graphic depictions of the Crucifixion and the martyrdoms of the saints.
While the great boom of cathedral building that had marked the previous century waned, cathedrals continued to serve as the centers of religious life and artistic creation. Wealthy patrons sponsored the production of elaborate altarpieces, as well as smaller panel paintings and religious statues for private devotional use. A growing literate elite created a demand for both richly decorated prayer books and volumes on secular topics. In Italy, the foremost Sienese painter, Duccio, sought to synthesize northern, Gothic influences with eastern, Byzantine ones, while the groundbreaking Florentine Giotto moved toward the depiction of three-dimensional figures in his wall paintings.
This third volume in the Art through the Centuries series highlights the most noteworthy concepts, geographic centers, and artists of this turbulent century. Important facts about the subjects under discussion are summarized in the margins of each entry, and salient features of the illustrated artworks are identified and discussed.

European Art of the Eighteenth Century (Art Through the Centuries)

European Art of the Eighteenth Century (Art Through the Centuries)

Product Description:
This latest volume in the Art Through the Centuries series presents the most important artists and artistic concepts of the eighteenth century. While the Baroque style, with its emphasis on emotionalism and naturalistic forms, had dominated the seventeenth century, a new sensibility, the Rococo, emerged in the early years of the next century. The Rococo style, characterized by delicately curving forms, pastel colors, and a lighthearted mood, began in French architectural and interior design and became popularized in the paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau and François Boucher.
In the second half of the century, in response to critics who urged a return to morally uplifting art and stimulated by excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, artists began to emulate Classical Greek and Roman models. Reinforced by aristocratic collectors who made the Grand Tour of Europe's Classical sites, this Neoclassical style found mature expression in Antonio Canova's sculptures and in the paintings of Jacques-Louis David, whose tributes to Roman republican virtues helped fuel French revolutionary fervor.

A feast for the eyes
This book is a great bargain. A paperback, it's small enough to take with you to Europe. Yet it's also lavish with color pictures of some of the world's most glorious art. And that's not all, it's also well written and very comprehensive, covering not only the history of art but architecture as well.

The seventeenth century saw an explosion in the number of great artists such as Rubens, van Dyck, Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Carravaggio. The dynamism and curved lines marked a sharp turn from the art of the past.

The book discusses the various movements in art and architecture, with wonderful examples of each. About a third of the book contains a short biography of all the famous artists and shows examples of their art.

Great Book
I am taking an art history course at the moment and this book was not required, but was suggested and I got it anyway. The quality of the pages is great; colors and images are very vivid. I am glad I bought this and will keep it for many years. It is a little more than I like to pay for books, but it's a good-sized book with a lot of images and information in it. I recommend this to anyone with a genuine interest in art history.
